Our Baroque Garden of Roses begins with two English gems: Holst's energetic St. Paul Suite and Elgar's sentimental Sospiri. The program features Respighi's rediscovered Suite for Organ and strings, which will be premiered with organist Kyler Brown (Director of Music, Church of St. Jean Baptiste). Mr. Brown and The Virgin Consort will then join the Chamber Orchestra and Maestro Di Vittorio with its premiere of the recently published Oratorio "The Garden of Roses" by Alessandro Scarlatti. A gorgeous display of madrigal-like arias, this recently restored oratorio was considered one of Scarlatti's masterpieces. Songs from this Oratorio have recently been championed by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli.

INTIMATE SETTINGS
Friday, February 3, 2012 at 12:00pm
Presented in part by The Tri-Institutional Noon Concerts

RESPIGHI, O.  Serenade, for small orchestra (U.S. Premiere)
STRAUSS, R.  Duet Concertino
COPLAND, A.  Appalachian Spring
Encore: RESPIGHI, O. (ed. Di Vittorio)  Aria for strings

Caspary Auditorium at Rockefeller University
1230 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021

No Tickets Required: FREE Admission (Seating is limited)

This performance includes the U.S. Premiere of Ottorino Respighi's lovely Serenade for small orchestra. Unlike the more austere Respighi works, this is a short captivating appetizer which shows the more lighthearted side of Respighi. The work has been compared to the engaging romantic music of Astor Piazzola. Richard Strauss's Duet Concertino is a pensive, elegant music - haunting in its soliloquy, featuring solo clarinet and bassoon. The program will close with Aaron Copland's masterwork Appalachian Spring, performed in its original chamber version. As an encore, we will showcase Respighi's Aria for strings from our acclaimed debut Naxos CDs.

Our Rhapsodic Themes concert will be a most exciting evening of musical delights. We will open with Gabrieli's brass fanfare Canzona Septimi Toni. The concert will feature the historically-significant restoration of Respighi's Tre Liriche (Three Songs) together with his orchestration of Monteverdi's extant Lamento di Arianna (from Monteverdi's lost second opera "Arianna"), showcasing mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack. The piano versions of the three songs were initially championed by tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Concert-goers may also recall Monteverdi's famous 'lasciatemi morire' motif, also included in Monteverdi's Madrigals Book VIII. The almost film-like Rhapsody on Theme of Paganini of Rachmaninoff follows with our shining emerging soloist, Marika Bournaki. The second half will begin with John Barry's theme from the film Out of Africa, and conclude with Beethoven's rhythmically charged Symphony No. 8.

Note: All proceeds of this concert will benefit the Chamber Orchestra of New York's next recording project.

FROM OLDEN VENICE
Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 7:30pm

VIVALDI, A.   Concerto for Violin in E-flat Major "La Tempesta di Mare"
Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin
GRIEG, E.   Holberg Suite "In Olden Style"
HAYDN, J.   Symphony No. 91

Venue To Be Announced.

Our season closing concert showcases our concertmaster Kelly Hall-Tompkins in Vivaldi's Concerto in E-flat Major "La Tempesta di Mare" , Grieg's delightful Holberg Suite, and Hadyn's stately Symphony No. 91. Haydn aficionados may note musical resemblances to his cantata (composed the same year) "Arianna a Naxos" -  which shares a connection with Monteverdi's Lamento di Arianna performed earlier this season by the Chamber Orchestra of New York.
